so, as you might have heard a plane crashed at schiphol airport some weeks ago. there was a report about it on the news and i've been thinking about that a few days and now i really feel like i should write something about it.
it appears that the aircraft fell from the sky because the auto pilot thought it had already landed, one of the altimeters malfunctioned and that appearantly told the auto pilot 'the plane is on the ground, shut down the engines'. now, i think that there's a great number of screwed up things about that.
back in the old days i wanted to become a pilot because i really loved flying, or atleast thought i would... but it appears that pilots these days dont need to fly anymore at all, they just push a few buttons and the plane does everything, then they just sit back and drink coffee... LAME!
i think auto pilots are a wonderful thing, i cant imagine having to keep an airplane in the air for over 10 hours when flying to america, so let a computer do that, fine, but then... after 10 hours of doing nothing... wouldnt it be nice to take the controls again? instead of leaving the landing to a computer that can't tell for sure if the plane is on the ground or not?
JUST HOW LAME CAN YOU BE THAT A PLANE CRASHES, PEOPLE DIE, BECAUSE THE PLANE WAS LANDING ON AUTO PILOT AND THE FUCKING FUCKED UP ALTIMETER MALFUNCTIONED!
so you would think that people learned something from all this... well, no, the bureau that investigated it only issued a warning that aircraft that had previous problems with altimeters shouldnt attempt to land on auto pilot...
so basically that tells me this is totally going to happen again because who knows when the altimeter is going to screw up again? can you tell in advance?
so, at this point i am going to wish everyone a happy life and i hope i will see you in the after life because i will fly to america on the 25th of april and... who knows when the altimeter will fuck up...

Devious Comments
At the end of the slope the Autopilot automaticly levels the plane off in a angle where the wings lose lift and the plane gently touches down.
The problem in this case was not doing this procedure (as its done correctly hundreds of times a day). It was the fact that the Auto pilot leveled the plane off in mid air, leaving the pilots with virtually no margin of error.
I ran procedures like this on simulators a thousand times and I noticed that if you are flying such a big plane on low speeds at a low altitude and the speed drops there is little you can do. The plane almost all the time gets into a irriversible stall in which the plane will subsequently drop from the sky like a brick.
Im not trying to justify the pilots, just illustrating that this was not happening because they choose to land by autopilot, its rather a error of misjudgement of the autopilot. The pilots suposibly didnt know that the second altimeter device also influenced the autopilot by making the decision to level up. By the time they realized they realized they would go down. Horrifying.
Still 9 deaths is a very good result for such a horifying event. Have fun in the US of A
Mistake from my side, its a ILS (Instrument Landing System) guidance system!
